Regina Spann is a recent graduate from our 11th cohort. For her, Joining Custom Collaborative was not just a career choice; it was a heartfelt commitment to personal growth and making a meaningful contribution to a more equitable and sustainable future. Many things kept her motivated but the main aspect was everyone's belief in her. According to Regina, “It was a transformative experience that highlighted the power of a supportive community in turning self-doubt into self-assured accomplishment.” She recalls her most proud moment was successfully completing her final project as it symbolized the culmination of an incredible journey filled with learning and growth. She was able to see how far she had come, from the early stages of the program to confidently applying her skills in a tangible creation. Now finished with her cohort commitment and looking forward to her next steps, she is On The Move. We sat down with Regina to look back on her recent journey, to give the women in the next cohort a reason to look forward. Here’s her story:
CC: Why did you join Custom Collaborative?
RS: My decision to join Custom Collaborative was driven by a dual purpose that resonates deeply with me. Firstly, I yearned to chase my lifelong dream of working in the fashion industry. Custom Collaborative provided the perfect platform to refine my skills, gain hands-on experience, and pursue a career I am truly passionate about. Equally compelling was Custom Collaborative's mission to empower women with the skills and confidence to design their own futures while contributing to a more sustainable world. This mission aligned seamlessly with my values, and I was eager to be part of an organization that not only nurtures individual dreams but also fosters positive change on a larger scale. Joining Custom Collaborative was not just a career choice; it was a heartfelt commitment to personal growth and making a meaningful contribution to a more equitable and sustainable future.
CC: What did you think would happen before you started this program?
RS: Before embarking on my journey with the Custom Collaborative training program, I held a somewhat narrow perception of what it entailed – primarily, the art of sewing. However, my time with the program unveiled a world far richer and more multifaceted than I had ever imagined. Beyond mastering the craft of sewing, I delved into the intricate realms of garment construction and pattern drafting, gaining a comprehensive understanding of fashion design. Additionally, Custom Collaborative expanded my horizons into the financial aspects of running a business within the fashion industry. Perhaps most importantly, I was introduced to the concept of sustainability in a profound way – not just as an abstract ideal, but as a tangible practice that balances meeting present needs while preserving our shared future. My experience at Custom Collaborative was nothing short of transformative, as it equipped me with a diverse skill set and a holistic perspective that I now carry with me into the next chapter of my career.
CC: Who or what made you want to keep going with the program?
RS: The unwavering encouragement and support from our Training Manager, Delia Alleyne, were nothing short of inspirational throughout my journey at Custom Collaborative. Delia's mentorship and belief in my potential ignited a passion within me to continue and excel in the program. Her guidance not only boosted my confidence but also instilled in me the determination to see the program through to completion. Delia exemplified the ethos of Custom Collaborative, fostering an environment where dreams and aspirations flourish. With her backing and my unwavering determination, I was driven to take the bold steps required to transition from the corporate world to the fashion industry, turning my dreams into a reality.
CC: What was the hardest part of the training that you worked hard to get through?
RS: The most daunting part of my training program at Custom Collaborative was grappling with a persistent lack of confidence in my ability to comprehend the intricacies of sewing and garment construction. At the outset, I was plagued by self-doubt, questioning whether I could ever successfully bring a design to life. However, it was the unwavering support and encouragement from our Training Manager, Delia Alleyne, and the camaraderie among my fellow classmates that transformed this daunting obstacle into a surmountable challenge. Together, we embraced daily affirmations that not only bolstered our spirits but also reminded us of our collective strength. Through their belief in me and my own determination, I gradually overcame my fears and gained the confidence to not only grasp the concepts but to thrive in this newfound skill. It was a transformative experience that highlighted the power of a supportive community in turning self-doubt into self-assured accomplishment.
CC: What was a time when you felt really good about something you did while you were at the Training Institute?
RS: Completing my final project at Custom Collaborative was the culmination of an incredible journey filled with learning and growth. It was the moment when I saw how far I had come, from the early stages of my training to confidently applying my skills in a tangible creation. This project wasn't just a testament to my dedication and hard work, but it was also a reflection of the support and mentorship I received from the amazing individuals at Custom Collaborative. The satisfaction and pride I felt upon completing it were truly unparalleled, serving as a reminder that I not only gained valuable skills but also the confidence to pursue my passion in the fashion industry. It was a moment that underscored the transformative power of this program, and I carry it with me as I embark on this exciting new chapter in my career.
